You finish a brutal conditioning session with your shirt soaked, legs heavy and a headache starting to creep in. Water is not cutting it, so you reach for something labelled “sports drink”. But electrolytes vs sports drinks is not a like-for-like choice. One is a group of essential minerals. The other is a broad product category that may contain those minerals, plus sugar, flavours, colours and ingredients that do not always serve your training.

If you train with intent, your hydration should work as hard as you do. The right option depends on how long you train, how much you sweat, the weather, your fuel needs and what is actually in the tub or bottle.

Electrolytes vs sports drinks: the real difference

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge in your body. They help regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions and nerve signalling. The major players are sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium, with sodium usually doing the heavy lifting during sweaty training.

When you sweat, you lose both water and electrolytes. Replace only the water after a long, hot or high-output session and you may still feel flat, cramp-prone or unable to bounce back properly. That is where an electrolyte drink can earn its place.
